It tells the complex sometimes just plain convoluted tale of how a laid-off black machinist named "Easy" Rawlins gets sucked into tracking down the runaway girlfriend of a rich and powerful white guy. There's low-down dirty doings in high places. There's lies told like truths and truths that are the ultimate in corruption.
Excellent review as expectedRachel! Walter Mosley remains one of those writers that makes you sit up and concentrate on what he puts down on the page. It's unexpected but nonetheless interesting, even if the characters are challenging the reader's expectations.
That said, Devil in Blue Dress is far from an average celluloid noir offering. I saw the film before I read the book, back in the s, and loved its visual sumptuousness. Motley, like the Daphne Monet, the femme fatale at the centre of the mystery, was of mixed race and — like Daphne — he struggled with his racial identity.
ChickenBones: A Journal. Throughout the series, Ezekiel Rawlins exemplifies that insecure psyches foster unhealthy attributes. Devil in a Blue Dress and Cinnamon Kiss.

Great explication of a forgotten neo-noir gem. I remember watching this when it first was released and wondering who the amazing actor was playing Mouse. The next time I saw him he was once again stealing every scene in "Out of Sight"; what I think may be his best performance.
